On March 15th, KDIC LSDJ Tad Boehmer and Emily Stuchiner sat down for a interview with the legendary Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna at the Englert Theatre, where Hot Tuna was preparing for a performance. Topics include Jefferson Airplane’s legendary gig at Grinnell College Homecoming in October 1966 (a week after Grace Slick joined the group), Jorma’s East Coast blues influences, the dynamics of electric versus acoustic sets, and what he thinks of his younger fans. Jack Casady, bassist extraordinaire and Jorma’s lifelong friend and bandmate, also makes a brief, unanticipated appearance at the end of the interview. Tad brought along copies of the original poster for the ’66 Grinnell performance (see left), and he discusses the show’s significance with the two musicians.
